A Brazilian judge says a former police inspector must do nearly two years of community service for offending a woman wearing a hijab in Rio de Janeiro.
Judge Andrea Teixeira says in her ruling that the retired officer broke Brazilian laws protecting religious freedom.
The Monday ruling says former inspector Raul Oliveira Dias Alves verbally accosted the woman, a Brazilian citizen, inside a bakery last year.
He loudly made insulting comments about her clothing and the Islamic faith, and asked what she was doing in Brazil. The ruling noted he showed signs of being drunk.
Another judge will decide how Alves does his community service. He will also face still to be determined restrictions on his movement during weekends.
Not what you’re thinking. That’s Procissão do Fogareu (bonfire procession), which happens every easter in Goias city.
Fundraising time: my book is on store and has absolutely nothing to do with this blog. It describes my experiences as a kid raised as a pentecostal protestant, grandson of an Assembly of God pastor, who turned to atheism at 17. As far as I know, it’s the first pro-atheist book from any Brazilian author.
